Camp Pioneer - Emloyment Opportunities

Employment Opportunities

Are you 14 or older and looking for a summer job?  The camping Committee of the Caddo Area Council is consistently searching for high caliber Scouts to keep up with our growth in attendance and expanding programs at Camp Pioneer.  It is our goal for 100% of our full time (15 years of age or older) staff to have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  This helps the Camp Pioneer Staff continue to be rated "second to none" each year by troops that attend our camp.

Camp Pioneer employs its staff for at least eight weeks each summer.  This makes for a job that takes up most of the summer.  Our pay scale is above average compared to other camps in our area. We hire 14 year olds Scouts as "Counselors in Training" (CIT's) to work for short periods (usually 2 to 4 weeks) and Scouts 15 and older for all summer.  In addition, we have many key positions that require adults age 18 and/or 21 and older.  You can expect long hours, hard work, extreme conditions, good food, and the most rewarding experience of your life.

If you are interested in being part of the Camp Pioneer Staff  you can download the PDF version of the 2009 Camp Pioneer Staff Application.  You may also call or write the Caddo Area Council Scout Office at the address below and ask for an application

What previous Camp Pioneer Staff members have said about the experience:

"My experience at Camp Pioneer began in 1958, when I came with Troop 19, Texarkana, AR, as a first year camper. I was privileged to serve on the staff from 1962-65. Since 1978, I have returned as an Old Timer and even was honored to serve as camp director. Having been in Scouting now for over 35 years and having attended many council camps, I have found that Camp Pioneer sets the camping standards for others to follow. I believe it lies in the quality of staff members which continue to bless the camp with an unparallel program. In the words of William Hillcourt, 'staffs must make the pages of the Scouting Handbook come alive'. Our staffs continue to do this. My years at camp are so memorable, space would not allow me to share so many treasured memories. The friends I made at camp are for a lifetime. Life just doesn't get any better than life at CAMP PIONEER. And life as a staff member, is a life all to itself." - Bob Harris, Sachse TX

"Life as I knew it is over. This camp has changed my life for ever it is the only time I am truly at peace when I leave it is like I leave a member of my family. I will always love this camp and will stay a staff member as long as I can." - Chris Ronan, Dining Hall and C.O.P.E. Staff, Camp Pioneer 2000-2003.

"Camp Pioneer is the best time of my life.  I spend 7 years as a camper and one year on staff.  Working staff is really fun.  I made really good friend with the staff members while on staff and as a camper.  I really love the tap out ceremony." - Mark Dell, Troop 28, Texarkana,Texas

It took seven weeks, seven weeks to change my life.
You have got to open up your mind, and look deep inside to make yourself realize,
There ain't no right nor wrong.
There ain't no good or bad.
It took seven weeks, seven weeks to change my life.
You've got to hold on to what you are now.
You've got to let go to what you were then.
Open up your mind to see what's deep inside.
Hold on. Let go.
It took seven weeks.

"This is a poem I wrote reflecting on how Camp Pioneer has changed my life. To me, Pioneer made me a better person and I will never forget it. I plan to go back for many years now and to once again enjoy the carefree life that I lived there this past summer.     To all my brothers, I love you and hope to see you next summer." - Elizabeth Rettig - Aquatics Staff 2002

"In 1990 while attending the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas a young man walked up to out of the blue and asked what my name was. I told him my name and he said "You taught me how to swim at Camp Pioneer".  What an honor it was for me to know that I had touched that guys life in a positive way.  I worked At Camp from 1983 on and off until 1990.  Today when bogged down in the job, or burned out from farming or raising kids, I sometime retreat to my front porch on hot summer evening and listen for the sound of a whippoorwill and go back to the camp where I "grew up".  At dusk on Friday night I still listen out into the woods for the prologue to be read by a big booming voice, or just get taken back by the smell of diesel that used to fill the smudge pots on Friday night. Yes, Camp Pioneer will always live in my memory." - John LaCour, Berryville, Arkansas

"There is no possible way to describe the friendships and experiences that I gained working on the staff at Camp Pioneer.  I worked on the staff for 8 summers of my life.  I look back at many things I have done and view my time on staff as some of the greatest.  I will always remember the times I had with my brothers on staff row.  There is no substitute for the memories I still retain." - Craig Mueller, Texarkana, Texas

"I was on staff at Pioneer 10+ years.  I made the best friends and brothers of my life there.  I am about to finish law school this year.  Many of my other staff colleagues have gone on to such careers as doctors (many!), lawyers (never enough!), law enforcement agents, accountants, teachers, stockbrokers, bond brokers, Navy SEALs, and many other professionals. One thing never changes when 2 or 20 of us get together--that camaraderie of living on staff row.  It is a place that will always be with us.  No matter how far away, we'll always remember that at 8:30ish on Friday night is campfire and OA ceremony.  Always remember--the staff here at Pioneer....(well you know the rest)." - Bryan Simmons, Austin, Texas

"I guess some of the best things I took away from my 10 summers on Staff at Camp Pioneer are the friends that will be with me forever and the vast knowledge I have of so many different things.  I learned how to fix plumbing, build things, first aid (CPR in particular), run electrical wiring, how to run a small business (the Trading Post), an incredible amount about safety from learning from the Waterfront guys and running the Shooting Sports Area, and most of all, leadership skills.  About six months into my first ever 'real' job all of my supervisors praised me on my ability to 'see the things that needed to be done' and my 'willingness to take charge' and said how impressed they were with those skills in someone my age.  They had no idea I had developed these skills five to seven years earlier while on Staff at Camp Pioneer.  I really consider Staff Row my home as much as anywhere else I've ever lived and the guys I worked with to be my family.  Every time I smell diesel smoke I can't help but to be taken back to Friday nights and wish I was there.  Now I'm 31, have a wife, 2 kids, a house, and a job but the thing that nags at me every day is trying to figure out what I can do so that I can work on Staff at Camp Pioneer next summer!" - David Harvey, Sherwood, Arkansas

"The Pool is the best area!! I love working there! And for the past 2 years I have had a real blast!! I am looking forward to one more great year!" - Amanda Tucker

“Working on staff at Camp Pioneer has to be the best thing I have ever done in my life.  Through my four years on staff (and my many visits since) I learned many valuable skills and real world solutions to everyday problems.  Camp Pioneer made me a better person.  Ask anyone who has worked on staff before.  Camp Pioneer makes respectable, dependable workers out of almost everybody that passes through the program.  I do not know where I would be if I had never went to Camp Pioneer.  I might be the same as I am now, only with a lot less friends that I can call Brothers.  I feel safe in my life because I know that no matter what, wherever I may be, I can call on one of my brothers to help me out.  And they know that I would do the same for them.  My brothers and I share a special bond that you cannot find anywhere else.  I always look forward to traveling back to Camp Pioneer to get back in touch with the whispering winds, but I most look forward to sharing time with my closest friends, my staff brothers from Camp Pioneer.” - Kyle Robertson, Redwater, Texas

The Back Deck
There is a place I go
That only my brothers know
We go there to talk what's on our mind
We talk about good things and sometimes bad things

People will never be able to see
That its where we always feel free.
Few will know of its importance to us;
The ones that truly know will change forever.
and no one will ever be able to take it from us

- Landon Bussey

"After working at Camp Pioneer for six years, I met many friends that are now a part of my family. Just like many have heard before, all of us will be there for anyone at the drop of a hat. I would never trade the sweat and tears I shed with my brothers at Camp Pioneer. I cannot wait for the day when I can take my children and grandchildren to camp and show them all the buildings I helped build and paint, the areas where I taught my merit badges, or the O.A. ring I was tapped out in. There is no better feeling than when watching a 12 year old Boy Scout learn how to complete something they never dreamed of doing before, whether it be repelling down the side of a climbing tower, shooting a bullseye, or busting a clay pigeon with a shotgun. No one will ever understand these experiences until they join the family that I am glad to be a part of at Camp Pioneer." - Steven Harvey, Ft. Worth, Texas

"HEY THIS IS LEPRECHAUN!!!! CAMP STAFF *01* & *02*!!! Camp Pioneer is the greatest camp ever. I have had the best time working on the staff up @ Pioneer.  I will continue to come be a part of the staff for as long as I possibly can!!" - Leppy
